The Premier League's early kick-off pitted the top two against each other in a clash that could have a huge bearing on the destiny of this season's title.
And it was Claudio Ranieri's surprise leaders Leicester City who continued their remarkable run this season, demolishing Manchester City 3-0 to take a six-point lead in the title race.
Manuel Pellegrini's side were never in the game, Leicester taking full advantage with two goals from Robert Huth sandwiching one by Riyad Mahrez to seal the extraordinary win.
City lacked the appetite for the fight in such a huge game, which will be a huge cause for concern within the club, as they continue to chase down an unprecedented Quadruple haul of trophies.
There is no such sense of recrimination at Leicester, whose incredible story continues with this deserved win, one which has taken them a step closer to the unlikeliest title triumph ever.
Here's what we learned from a potentially seismic afternoon at the Etihad.

1. City a shambles at the back

Man City V Leicester
Nicolas Otamendi went to ground for Leicester's second, allowing Riyad Mahrez to score, while Martin Demichelis was beaten in the air by Robert Huth for the third.

2. Toure lamentable again

Man City V Leicester
The quickest Yaya Toure moved all day was when he was hooked by Manuel Pellegrini just after the break.
Clearly Toure does not feel he has a point to prove to incoming City boss Pep Guardiola.
On this evidence, Toure is out of City this summer.

3. Mahrez ran City ragged

Man City V Leicester
Riyad Mahrez won and took the free-kick that led to Leicester's opener, before capping that with a wonderful solo goal to see off City.
In this form, the Algeria international is simply unplayable and a snip at £400,000.

4. Schmeichel made a majestic save

Man City V Leicester
Mahrez and Jamie Vardy may be grabbing all the plaudits at Leicester this season, but Kasper Schmeichel continued his fine season with a remarkable reflex save just after the break to deny sub Fernando.

5. Ranieri's spirit a joy to watch

Man City V Leicester
Even with his side 3-0 up and heading for a six-point lead at the top, Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri was still in the technical area, cajoling and berating his side, his enthusiasm and spirit refreshing to watch, just like his team.
